Calton's research interests are in the areas of service computing, distributed and cloud computing, dynamic analytics on changing big data. His current projects include cloud computing (WISE/Elba project) and dynamic analytics (GRAIT-DM project) research. Using experimental data from realistic benchmarks, the WISE project studies millibottlenecks, very short bottleneck phenomena that have large impact on n-tier application latency. The GRAIT-DM project continuously collect fake news on COVID-19 and other disasters to distinguish real information from fake news. The sponsors for Calton's research include both government funding agencies such as NSF, and companies from industry such as Fujitsu.  He is the director of Center for Experimental Research in Computer Systems (CERCS) at Georgia Tech.  He is also the director of RCN on Big Data for Smart Cities, managed as part of the GRAIT-DM project.

Lewis Faulk is an Associate Professor of Public Administration and Policy in the School of Public Affairs at American University. Dr. Faulk is a Fellow of the Metropolitan Policy Center at American University, Affiliate Faculty of the Management Department at Kogod School of Business, Affiliated Faculty of American University’s Center for Innovation, Editor in Chief of Nonprofit Management and Leadership, and Research Fellow of the Center for Organizational Research and Design at Arizona State University.  Dr. Faulk's research focuses on nonprofit management, nonprofit finance and entrepreneurship, and the intersection of nonprofit organizations and public policy. His current research investigates how nonprofit organizations respond to neighborhood gentrification and resident displacement, the effects of competition in the nonprofit sector, determinants of early organizational success, new public policies and policy tools that support social innovation, and factors that influence foundation grant-making, organizational capacity, financial health, and performance.

Research Partner

Mirae Kim is an associate professor of Nonprofit Studies and MPA program director at the Schar School of Policy and Government. Before joining the Schar School, Kim was a faculty member of the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies at Georgia State University from 2017 to 2020, and before that she taught at the Harry S. Truman School of Public Affairs at the University of Missouri. Kim earned her PhD in 2014 from Rutgers School of Public Affairs and Administration and a master's degree from Carnegie Mellon University. Kim earned her bachelor's degree in English literature from Seoul National University in South Korea and was an exchange student for over a year at Auckland University in New Zealand. Finally, Kim was a member of the Penn Social Impact Doctoral Fellows Program led by Dr. Peter Frumkin.                Currently, Kim serves as a co-editor of the Nonprofit Policy Forum. Also she is a board member at the the Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action (ARNOVA) and visiting scholar at the Independent Sector. Kim is currently part of the research team that builds the Nonprofit Panel Data Platform, which is funded by the National Science Foundation in order to improve how we collect data about nonprofit organizations. Also, Kim has been also leading the “Nonprofit Organization Research Panel” project since 2015, which she created to provide valuable information for nonprofit practitioners while producing much needed data for researchers in the nonprofit community. This initiative was inspired by her previous role as a managing editor of the Civic Engagement magazine that seeks to facilitate discourse about public service – and broaden interest in the field. 

Teresa Derrick-Mills is a principal research associate in the Center on Labor, Human Services, and Population at the Urban Institute. She studies programs and translates research to improve implementation practice and knowledge building; studies and applies performance measurement and continuous quality improvement in an intergovernmental, cross-sector context; and seeks to understand the intersections of policy and practice, particularly in early care and education and workforce development. She recently coauthored a chapter in Nonprofits and Government: Conflict and Collaboration on the interrelationships of performance measurement for governments and nonprofits. Her current work includes translating research for practice in juvenile justice, strengthening the capacity of community action agencies to engage in evaluation, examining performance measures for employer engagement, studying child care subsidy systems, and developing apprenticeship frameworks. Before joining Urban, Derrick-Mills contributed to early childhood systems building in North Carolina through executive-level work in a nonprofit, and she spent a year in the federal government designing a new system of performance measurement for the Corporation for National and Community Service. Derrick-Mills is an adjunct professor at the George Washington University. She holds BS degrees in sociology and political science from Florida State University, an MPA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a PhD in public policy and public administration, with a specialization in program evaluation, from the George Washington University.
